Singular and plural noun forms, common plural patterns, and article changes.
Change singular der, die, and das to plural die. Use plural noun phrases with die and recognize that German has no plural form of ein or eine.
Form common plurals with -e, including forms with an umlaut such as Stuhl–Stühle and Hand–Hände. Recognize this pattern especially with masculine and neuter nouns.
Build plurals with -n or -en, as in Blume–Blumen, Frau–Frauen, and Student–Studenten. Recognize this frequent pattern among feminine nouns and certain nouns for people.
Form common neuter plurals with -er and distinguish forms with an umlaut, such as Kind–Kinder, Buch–Bücher, and Haus–Häuser.
Compare nouns that add -s, such as Auto–Autos and Foto–Fotos, with nouns that have no plural ending, such as Lehrer–Lehrer and Mädchen–Mädchen. Recognize when an unchanged plural adds an umlaut, as in Vater–Väter.
Use keine, meine, deine, and other ein-type words before plural nouns. Contrast singular ein Buch with plural Bücher and negative plural keine Bücher.
Form the plural of a compound noun by changing its final noun, as in Haustür–Haustüren and Wörterbuch–Wörterbücher. Keep the earlier parts of the compound unchanged.
